The German Book Prize 2006: book display, readings and interviews at the Frankfurt Book Fair
The Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels – German Publishers & Booksellers Association - marks the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair with its presentation of the German Book Prize 2006 to the year’s best German-language novel. As of Tuesday, 12 September 2006, the six finalists will have been chosen for the shortlist. These authors find out which of them has won the award at the prize ceremony on the evening of 2 October 2006.
The newly proclaimed winner of the German Book Prize will be Ulrich Wicker’s guest when the programme “Wickerts Bücher” is recorded at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Wednesday, 4 October 2006. It will be shown the same day immediately after the news programme “Tagesthemen”. The award-winning author can also be seen and heard on the following occasions during the Frankfurt Book Fair:

This year for the first time, the Frankfurt Book Fair includes a display featuring the authors nominated for the longlist and their current novels (Hall 3.1 / L 114, alongside the hr2 Forum Fiction & Non-Fiction). Throughout the five days of the Fair, the public can come here for an overview of the various authors’ body of work and an insight into the broad spectrum of the latest contemporary German literature.
Awarded by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the German Book Prize has been in existence since 2005 with the backing of partners Florian and Gabriele Langenscheidt, SPIEGEL-Verlag, the Frankfurt Book Fair and Frankfurt am Main’s city authorities. Deutsche Welle concentrates its support for the German Book Prize on media activities in other countries.
The judges for the German Book Prize 2006 are: Volker Hage (Der Spiegel), John von Düffel (author), Elmar Krekeler (Die Welt), Terézia Mora (author), Pia Reinacher (critic), Stephan Samtleben (Buchhandlung Samtleben) and Denis Scheck (Deutschlandfunk). The winner receives prize money of 25,000 euros, the other five finalists 2,500 euros each.
The prize ceremony will be held in the Kaisersaal at Frankfurt’s Römer on 2 October 2006, in the immediate run-up to the Frankfurt Book Fair.
