John von Düffel

John von Düffel studied philosophy and economics in Stirling (Scotland) and Freiburg. He obtained his doctorate in 1989 with a thesis on epistemology and has worked since then as a dramaturgist at various theatres, presently at Hamburg’s Thalia Theatre. The awards he received for his debut novel “Vom Wasser” included the “Aspekte”-Literaturpreis and the Mara-Cassens-Preis. The family saga “Houwelandt” is his most recent publication.

Volker Hage

From 1975 to 1986 Volker Hage worked for the literary review of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as well as the FAZ Magazine. He then went on to spend six years as leading literary editor for DIE ZEIT. Since 1992, he has been an editor with the arts department at Der Spiegel. Volker Hage is the author and editor of many books; his most recent titles have been “Propheten im eigenen Land. Auf der Suche nach der deutschen Literatur” (1999) and “Zeugen der Zerstörung. Die Literaten und der Luftkrieg” (2003).

Elmar Krekeler

Elmar Krekeler studied musicology in Mainz. He began his career in journalism as a music critic, moving on to literature and working as an editor for the daily DIE WELT. In 1998 he was co-founder of the regular Saturday supplement DIE LITERARISCHE WELT and has been its director since 2001. In 2004, Elmar Krekeler was awarded the Alfred Kerr Prize for Literary Criticism.

Terézia Mora

Terézia Mora was born in Hungary and studied Hungarology and drama at Humboldt University in Berlin. After screenplay studies at the German Film and Television Academy, she worked as a screenplay dramaturgist. Since 1998, Terézia Mora has been a freelance writer and translator from Hungarian. She has received numerous literary awards for her stories and for her first novel “Alle Tage”.

Pia Reinacher

Pia Reinacher studied German, Romance languages and literature and art history at Zürich University and obtained her doctorate writing on “The language of clothes in literary text. Examinations of Gottfried Keller and Robert Walser.” From 1992 to 2000, she was head of literature at the Zürcher Tages-Anzeiger, and has been a freelance literary critic writing for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Weltwoche since 2000. Pia Reinacher lectures on literary criticism and culture critique, as well as culture and media, at the universities of Zürich, Fribourg and Basel.

Stephan Samtleben

Stephan Samtleben studied German, Romance languages and literature and philosophy in Cologne, Kiel and Brest (France). He went on to train for the book trade and then worked in Munich, Eutin and Schleswig. In 1989 he set up his own bookshop in the Hamburg Literaturhaus. He is on various juries in Hamburg and on the committee for the Italo-Svevo-Preis.

Denis Scheck

Denis Scheck studied German, contemporary history and politics in Tübingen, Düsseldorf and Dallas. He is a literary agent, translator of American and British authors, editor and freelance critic. Since 1996, he has been the literary editor at Deutschlandfunk and presents the book magazine programme “Druckfrisch” on German TV (ARD).
