The phone rings. Karl von Kahn is told by Gundi, his best friend’s wife, that his friend is in hospital. Gundi asks him to grant the last wish of the mortally ill man. Biography

Martin Walser, born 1927 in Wasserburg, lives in Überlingen on Lake Constance. He has received numerous awards for his literary work, including the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1981 and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1998. He has also been decorated with the order “Pour le Mérite” and been designated “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres”. His most recent publications have been “Leben und Schreiben. Tagebücher 1951 – 1962” and the novel “Augenblick der Liebe”.
