76 publishing companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland take part / Bodo Kirchhoff spokesman for the 2005 jury / Börsenverein presents award for the first time on 17 October 2005 at the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair
The jury’s work for the German Book Prize 2005 has now begun. By 9 April - the closing date for submissions, 124 German-language novels had been nominated. “All the leading literary publishers have taken part in the submission process – an outstanding response to the new prize”, in the words of Dr. Gottfried Honnefelder, publisher with DuMont Literatur und Kunst Verlag and chairman of the German Book Prize Academy. Around half of the nominated titles (65) are due for publication in the summer or autumn of 2005. Submissions have been received from 63 publishing companies in Germany, eight in Austria and five in Switzerland. Each publishing company can put forward a maximum of two novels. Up until 2 July 2005, the jury can request additional titles for its consideration. The prize is being awarded for the first time this year by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels – German Publishers & Booksellers Association. The presentation will be held in the Kaisersaal at Frankfurt’s Römer on 17 October 2005 as a first event marking the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Bodo Kirchhoff is spokesman for the jury in 2005
At its first meeting in Frankfurt’s Literaturhaus, the seven-strong jury chose author Bodo Kirchhoff as its spokesman. Kirchhoff made his literary debut in 1979 with the novella “Ohne Eifer, ohne Zorn” and has since written many novels (among them Infanta; Parlando; Wo das Meer beginnt) and film screenplays. As a freelance writer, he lives in Frankfurt am Main and on Lake Garda. The other members of the jury are: Verena Auffermann (critic), Klaus Bittner (Buchhandlung Klaus Bittner), Dr. Volker Hage (DER SPIEGEL), Dr. Wolfgang Herles (Aspekte, ZDF), Armin Thurnher (Der Falter, Vienna) and Juli Zeh (Autorin).
The jury chooses the winner over several selection stages. It looks through all the titles submitted by the publishing companies and compiles a longlist of 20 titles that will be announced on 24 August 2005. From this, the jurors then select six titles for the shortlist which will be published on 21 September 2005. On the evening of the prize presentation, the six authors will find out which of them has been chosen for the German Book Prize. The winner receives prize money of 25,000 euros; the five other finalists receive 2,500 euros each.
Partners for the German Book Prize are Dr. Florian and Gabriele Langenscheidt, SPIEGEL-Verlag, the Frankfurt Book Fair and Frankfurt City.
