Gila Lustiger

That`s The Way We Are / So sind wir
Berlin Verlag

A paperweight, newspapers, a doll – inspired by personal objects, the first-person narrator of this autobiographical novel follows in the remembered footsteps of her parents, grandparents and close relatives. They are Central European Jews, victims of history, saying nothing, but having a brilliant memory. The author uses her imagination to fill the gaps in the family chronicle. In a host of episodes that closely link the tragic and the comic, the history of European Jewry unfolds alongside what is often a painful private search for suppressed memories.
