Bargeman Thomas finds himself far from the inland waterways out in the depths of the Lower Saxony countryside, where the land extends into the distance beneath the lowering sky, and a sense of disquiet drives him out of the house at night. Over ten rainy nights, he remembers incredible events, the stages along the journey that is his life. Again and again, he meets a group of people clad in black, their appearance heralding disaster and catastrophes – that dark society his grandfather had always warned him against.
